Petco Training Classes for Adult Dogs: A Detailed Review

Which Petco Training Classes Are Offered for Adult Dogs?

Petco offers two types of training classes for adult dogs or puppies over six months old. The Adult I class, also known as "Fundamentals," covers basic commands such as sit, down, stay, come, leave it, and loose leash walking. The Adult II class, also known as "Advanced," builds upon these skills and introduces Heel and walking with distractions. Additionally, Petco offers the AKC Complete Package, which includes both Adult classes and a Canine Good Citizen test. These classes can be purchased separately or as a package.

Where are Petco Training Classes Held?

Petco training classes are held within the store itself. The training facility is typically separated from the store by a movable wall that blocks the dogs' view but allows them to hear the activity in the store. This arrangement provides plenty of exposure to the sounds and distractions of a busy environment, which can be beneficial for dogs who need to learn to feel comfortable in such situations.

What are the Classes Like? Our Experience

Classes at Petco are typically small, with only a few dogs and their owners in attendance. In our experience, the Adult II class had only two dogs, including our own. The classes are 50 minutes long and progress gradually, starting within the training center and eventually incorporating training exercises within the store itself.

During the first class, you will need to provide your dog's immunization records. Additionally, it is important to bring a fixed leash that is no longer than six feet. Petco follows positive reinforcement training methods and requires the use of either a flat or rolled collar, or a harness. Metal choke collars and pinch collars are not permitted.

The classes start with basic commands and progress to more challenging exercises. For example, we practiced loose leash walking and heeling, and later worked on a long line to train recall with distractions. The classes also include exercises that involve walking down aisles with distractions, such as treats or toys, to practice impulse control. The final class serves as a refresher and tests the dog's ability to perform commands in a real store setting. Upon successful completion, the dog receives a certificate, a toy, and treats.

What to Expect from Petco Trainers

Trainers at Petco utilize positive reinforcement methods and have undergone comprehensive training through Petco's science-based program. Although most trainers are not CPDT-KA certified, they are qualified to serve as AKC Canine Good Citizen evaluators, allowing dog owners to take the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test at Petco stores. While not all trainers hold advanced certifications, our experience with Petco trainers has been positive, and they have proven to be knowledgeable and skilled in assisting both puppies and adult dogs with their training needs.

Pros and Cons of Petco Training Classes for Adult Dogs

Pros

  • Affordable: Petco offers training classes at a reasonable price, making it accessible to dog owners on a budget.
  • Personalized Attention: With small class sizes, trainers can provide more individualized attention to each dog and their owner.
  • Increased Socialization: Holding classes in a store setting allows dogs to interact with other animals and people, enhancing their socialization skills.
  • Flexible Schedule: Puppy classes are offered frequently, and with numerous Petco stores available, finding a class that suits your schedule is easier.

Drawbacks

  • Small Class Size: The small size of classes can limit the opportunity for dogs to socialize with a larger group of dogs and people.
  • Small Classroom Space: The limited training facility may restrict certain exercises, such as recall, and may be overwhelming for overly excited dogs.
  • Store Noise: The noise and activity in the store can be distracting for easily distracted, nervous, shy, or overly excited dogs.
  • Trainers without Advanced Certification: While most trainers receive comprehensive training, the overall quality of training can vary between stores. For serious behavioral concerns, finding a CPDT-KA certified trainer might be recommended.

Overall, Petco training classes offer a convenient and affordable option for dog owners looking to provide their adult dogs with basic obedience training. While there are some limitations to consider, such as small class sizes and potential distractions in the store, the positive reinforcement approach and the opportunity for increased socialization make these classes worthwhile for many.
